Real life awaits you.
Say goodbye to The Holy Mountain.
See the illusion around you. You must not stay here.
"Look up from your screen"
But this is not your reality. This is a review of a film.
You fantasize about your own life and what you will achieve. You wish to live in this fairytale.
I will leave you in a similar way that Jodorowsky leaves us.
Are you one of the thieves, who wishes to turn away from a life of depravity?
Are you the alchemist, who wishes to assist the journey of others?
Are you the prostitute with the monkey, who wishes to follow someone deserving?
Are you the feral Jesus, who wishes to create miracles?
Think of who you relate to in the story.
It is very beneficial to let this film wash over you, and allow your subconscious to draw forth meaning.
Who are you now when you are watching it? Will you see it differently at a later time?
The Holy Mountain exists to beckon you toward an experience that you will never forget.
Therefore, this isn't a film that should be reviewed. To give it a score is like giving your own life a rating.
You will have no identity anymore. You are merely a viewer, watching images on a screen.
Much like the characters in the film, you must surrender your mind and your body.
The film wants you to get lost in its world. To abandon thoughts of your own life.
But it's also a film about you: the viewer.
About the value of asceticism. About the truth of religion.
It's a story about spiritual expression.
The last act shows their journey to the Holy Mountain.
The middle half of the film introduces the rest of the characters.
It is a world where imagery replaces reasoning, and anything becomes a possibility.
The first thirty minutes contains no dialog, and allows you to get fully sucked into the world of the film.
The imagery here is so psychedelic, so vibrant, and so strange. It's an experience to watch, high or sober.
I was debating what to do with this review. How do I provide a companion piece for such a unique film?
