2014
Director: James Gunn
Genre: Sci-fi action
There are so many movies out there. Just like books, albums, tv shows, food to eat, or people to meet. Your time is finite. And yet all the media we choose to consume becomes a representation of our individual identities. You give money to a product and hope it will entertain you. Maybe it will give you an exhilarating feeling or provide you with something to discuss with another person. This is the basis of art. Art is there to entertain, provoke emotions, inspire thoughts, and bring people together.
I really liked Guardians of the Galaxy. This may be very heavily influenced by the fact that I am a big fan of the director, James Gunn. His previous film Super is so amazing. Ironically, the budget of that film was about 2.5 million, while this film cost nearly 200 million to make.
So many current action movies feel like they were made just for the action scenes. What really sets Guardians of the Galaxy apart for me is that the basic scenes of two characters talking were given just as much care as the insane action spectacle. The reason for this is most likely because the director actually likes and cares about these characters.
Unfortunately, the film is bogged down by existing as a subsection of the Marvel cinematic universe. I would love it so much better if the Guardians of the Galaxy just started its own franchise and left the rest of Marvel behind.
Guardian of the Galaxy is certainly one of the only Marvel films that I actually wanted to see again after watching it the first time.
I wish superhero films could be about a superhero and not about a pointless adventure that serves and nothing more than to lead up to another pointless adventure.
The cast is great. The film is enjoyable even after multiple watches. I love the part where Groot gives the flower to the little girl, because it's a moment that could be undercut with a dumb joke, but instead becomes a sincere moment of humanity.
