Overall, I think this is a really good episode of Black Mirror, as well as a fascinating experimental film. Many films have explored the ideas of control and free will, but the media of film cannot actually put us in control of the protagonist. We are merely bystanders and observers to his or her choices. Bandersnatch is different. We dictate how the story goes through various choices.
This film is partially a viewing experience, and partially a video game. We are allowed to choose the ending for Stefan. And in doing so we are interacting with a piece of technology with a human face, much like the characters of other Black Mirror episodes have. Rather than passively observing someone’s decline, we are perpetrating it.
It’s a unique concept piece, and fits perfectly with a series like Black Mirror.
But is this film any more interesting than it’s concept, or is this just a gimmick?
